Amherst School Board Updates The Community: June 2022

To the editor:

New Board:

After the elections in March the Amherst School board welcomed Jason White to our team.  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Greg Fritz for running and Elizabeth Kuzsma for her many years of service to the Amherst School Board.

At our first meeting after the town election, Tom Gauthier was re-elected as our board chair, Victoria Parisi was elected as vice chair, and Jason Whote was elected board secretary.

Amherst Middle School Updates:

We were excited and proud when Amherst Middle School was recently awarded the NH Middle School of the year award by the NH Excellence in Education Committee!  It is a testament to the hard work of our teachers, administrators, students and staff that fellow educators felt Amherst Middle School deserved this recognition.  Congratulations to everyone at AMS!

We would like to thank Dr. Bethany Bernasconi for her service to AMS and the Amherst community as principal.  We are confident that her next educational experience will be just as successful as her time at our middle school.

As Dr. Bernasconi departs, we are excited to welcome Kristen Gauthier as our next principal at AMS.  We look forward to working with Kristen and continuing to build on the successes at our middle school.

Facilities Update:

At our most recent meeting the SAU board reaffirmed its commitment to the important work of the JFAC committee. The Amherst School Board looks forward to our continued partnership with JFAC as we decide how to best handle the needs of our schools buildings and grounds.  Keep your eyes out for updates and more information as our work toward a solution for our school facilities continues over the summer and into next fall.

Superintendent Update:

The Amherst School would like to thank Adam Steel for his work as superintendent of SAU 39.  Adam has helped our school community grow and thrive and we wish him well in all future endeavors.

We also welcome Steven Chamberlin as interim superintendent and look forward to working with him in his new role.

Policy Season:

The integral work of the policy committee has begun for another season.  The policy committee meets every other week for most of the summer to tackle the many policies and procedures that govern our district.  Policy meetings are open to the public and listed on the SAU 39 calendar.

Start Times:

After discussion at a recent SAU meeting it was determined that the current start times this year will remain the same for next year.  The board will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the current start time model and seek to improve some of the challenges we faced last year.

Upcoming Meetings/Events:

  • June 6th: Amherst School Board Meeting:  6pm-7pm:  SAU Brick Building

  • June  6th: SAU Board meeting: 7pm-8pm: SAU Brick Building

  • June 8th: Last Day of School Amherst School District

The Amherst School Board can be reached for comments or questions by emailing ASB@sau39.org .  We hope everyone has a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing everyone again in August.

Sincerely,

Tom Gauthier, Chair

Girl Scouts Thank Community

To the editor:

Amherst Girl Scout Troop 22720 would like to thank everyone in the community for all the generous donations to our “Welcome Kits To Welcome Kids” project! We had a donation bin in the Amherst Town Library for a few weeks in March and we were happily overwhelmed with donations, collecting over 300 items for the children at the Nashua Children’s Home. So many kind people gave to our project. A special shout out to Brownie Troop 60162, who used some of their cookie money to help our effort. All of these donations will greatly benefit everyone at the Nashua Children’s Home. We are so fortunate to live in such a giving community!

Sincerely,

Bella d’Ambrosio and Marjorie Vincent
